Coupes de Printemps 2016

Last weekend, Montlhéry hosted the Coupes de Printemps (Spring Cups). It’s a really enjoyable event that gathers a lot of remarkable cars. It was a real show on track, even if the weather was a little cold.

Even if the weather was not as shiny as expected, it was still better than last year. It didn’t rain, allowing all cars to get on the track, mechanical issues apart. The first contenders arrived early, and the access to the circuit is a first meeting point.

The whole circuit was open, allowing the audience could access everywhere, and get close to the cars. The classic car part was partly filled, but the cars were quite interesting and their owners ready to answer any question. You could access to the paddock as well, and there was no restriction to get close to the cars racing.

The cars were split into three grids, gathering exotic and racing cars. Several cars caught our attention : two Ford GT40, a rare Maserati 8CM, a nice group of DB Panhard including the DB HBR5 “Camionnette” that ran the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans, or several beautiful Bugattis.

The event began shortly before 10 am with the parade of the Bugatti Club. Even if led by a safety car, this stream of exceptional cars is a perfect overture for the Coupes de Printemps. However, some members forgot to bring their Bugatti…

Then, the three grids came one after another, until noon break. The first grid gathers the oldest cars engaged in the Coupes de Printemps : Ac Aceca Bristol, Bugatti Type 51, Allard J2, Jaguar Xk120 et Xk140, MG TA, Frazer Nash BMW 320, Aston Martin, and 3 little single-seaters. Despite their age, the cars are not here for a lazy ride !

The second grid gathers the Panhard armada. These cars are far from ridiculous with their small engine, compared to their opponents. They are obviously slower than the two Lotus, an Elan and an Elite, which fly over the other cars. You could also see several Porsche 356, Alpine A110, a Roné Bonnet, or a Matra Djet…

The last grid gathers a lot of Austin Healeys, even if the queens of the track are a Jaguar E-Type, a Chevron B8 and a Ford GT40. The BBM Simca that ran the Coupes de l’Avenir is quick despite its small engine, the Peerless GT brings a touch of exoticism, along with the BMW 3.0 CSL.

After lunch, every one is gathered for the award ceremony. Muguette Demantes, driving the Panhard Dyna Z from the first grid, gets the women’s cup and the overall cup goes to the owner of the “Camionette”, it was a good performance for the Panhard cars.
The awarded people also get prizes from Motul and Chapal, who helped to organize the event.

The afternoon doesn’t get any warmer, but the cars are still fast. A few mechanical issues though, like the Frazer Nash BMW which loses oil, smokes a lot and doesn’t start again, or the Mini that hit a wall, losing oil as well.

It’s an event you should not miss in the future.

Techno Classica Essen 2016

Next week, Techno Classica Essen begins. The biggest classic car show in Europe opens its doors on wednesday and the program is really entertaining.

Techno-Classica-Essen-2016From 6th to 10th of April, Essen, a city located in the Rühr valley in Germanny will become the central node of the classic cars entusiasts from the whole Europe, as shown by last year figures :

  • 190.000 visitors
  • 1250 exhibitors
  • 2500 cars exposed
  • 125.000 sqm

Each of the three main german manufacturers  occupy its own hall while the others are spread all over the show. You will be able to see all the brands of the VAG group, showing cars from their museum, BMW, alongside Mini ans Rolls-Royce, and obvioulsy Mercedes, which shares its space with some of hte best specialist of the brand.

However Techno Classica Essen is not deditated to the manufacturers only, do not miss the second floor, where you can find the clubs. Germany always offers special cars and the friendly atmosphere is inimitable.

Likewise, if you are looking for parts, exhibhitors from the entire Europe are there to show their products and you can find almost everything for british, italian and german cars (it is a bit more difficult for french cars).

Last but not least, aside from manufacturers and cars salers, the biggest and the most prestigious exhibition of Techno Classica Essen is around the “castle”, which combines hospitality and rendez-vous zone. This year, this exhibition is consecrated to the Mille Miglia 1955 cars, the most mythic MM of all time. Cars such as Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, Ferrari 750 Monza or Porsche 550 Spyder are expected to be there, and we can not wait to confirm their attendance !

Who is behind ClassicCarNews.net ?

We are a small team of Frenchies dedicated to share our passion with you. At the moment, ClassicCarNews.net hides two people : Benjamin who lives in France and runs the website News d’Anciennes, and me, freshly arrived in the UK.

However, English is definitively not our native language, please forgive us for the mistakes that might appear here and there. And we would be happy to have english people helping us out !

What is ClassicCarNews.net ?

We will keep you up-to-date about the different events we will cover,in the UK, but also in France, obviously, and all over Europe.

We will visit museums too, and share the experience with you.

We will drive classic cars, and tell you how it feels.

We will focus on the Motoring History as well, to share the entertaining (or sometimes boring as hell) tales hidden behind a car or an engine.

Les Belles Champenoises d’Epoque 2016

Every year, in the first days of March, Reims, in France, becomes an unavoidable meeting place for the classic car owners. The show, aka Salon Champenois du Véhicule de Collection, is best known by its organisers’ name : les Belles Champenoises d’Epoque.

If you expected to see Mercedes 300SLs, Ferraris, Aston Martins and such, you are too late. You had to go to Rétromobile, another major event, but for very different standards.

Les Belles Champenoises d’Epoque is considered beiing THE reference of popular shows. There, part sellers allow you to find whatever you need to  refurbish your carn and the populars take the most part of the cars exhibited. Let us show you around.

Luckily, the weather is fair, sparing the crowd that gathered at the entrance more than one hour before the opening of the doors. It’s a real rush since the opening, no one wants toi miss THE part they are looking for,, before someone else gets it. The aisles are filed at an incredible speed, and one hour after the opening, you have to pay attention not to push someone, either inside or outside !

There is a lot of sellers offering a wide range of parts, no pro would miss this event. You can hunt bargains for used parts, and even find body parts to restore at the “scrap sellers”. Some stalls look more like a bric-a-brac though, the appeal for old stuff associated to the automotive universe allow you you find whatever you can imagine. For example, you could find a large amount of scale models (old ans new), manuals, history books, old toys, or even decorative objects.

For those of you who just want to see classic cars, Les Belles Champenoises d’Epqoue is an interesting show as well. Two halls are dedicated to the clubs, exhibiting thei cars of their members, in compliance with the theme proposed by the organisers (who set a stand contest). This year, the the was “Cinema”, several stands had set demonstrations, while others had just decorated their stand. There is however a little drawback, the clubs tend to close their area with cords, preventing you to take the best pictures and not really inciting you to go and talk to the people there. There is a lot of cars exposed, nevertheless, and the populars have are highlighted, that is refreshing.

There was a motocycle exhibition too, because Les Belles Champenoises d’Epoque is not exclusively starring cars. There was a wide range of models and stands available for the visitors.

The other exhibition is not inside the site, but on the car park where were gathered the classic cars owend by the visitors. It is not the biggest park you can visit, Automédon has a far bigger one, but we can see really beatiful/rare models, sometimes coming form Belgium, the Netherlandsor even the UK ! You can meet a small group, here and there, they are the membmers of a forum or a club, enjoying the moment. It is a quite cheerful atmosphere.

To sum it up, Les Belles Champenoises d’Epoque is an unavoidable event for the popular car lover (mainly french cars, but you can find parts for english and italian cars quite easily). We recommend it to you if you missed it. See you there next year, especially if the weather is as clement as it was this year !

The Jaguar XKSS is back !

Jaguar-Land Rover Heritage is no more, this department is now called Jaguar-Land Rover Classic. And their first big annoucement is awesome, they will build 9 brand new Jaguar XKSS.

If you do not know the XKSS, do not worry, it is a car known by well-informed people. In fact, it’s derived from the D-Type which was a successful race car, since its debut in 1954, replacing the C-Type. The D-Type is mainly known for winning the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1955, 1956 and 1957.

By the end of 1956, Jaguar wants to stop its official racing engagement, letting private team race with their cars. However, it does not mean stopping the development, becaus ethe D-Type is not approved as a road car in the US, They need 25 “street version” cars to be approved by the SCCA.

Jaguar’s board decides to produce 25 XKSS, derived from the D-Type, with bumpers, luggage rack, hood and a passenger door. However the factory where it is built burns whereas only 16 models have been produced ! This car is obviously rare and, besides replicas, extremely expensive.

The new lot of Jaguar XKSS to be built will not really be a bargain, though. The price tag for the “brand new” models is £1 million ! Jaguar-Land Rover Classis says it will be the fruit of the best of Jaguar engineering allied with the original look of the XKSS and a XK engine buildt with the greatest of care. 9 cars will be built, to finally reach the 25 cars that were intially planned, back in the day. Production is assumed to start next year.

However, do not try to call your local Jaguar dealer. You will not be allowed to book one, unless you are a huge car collector or one of the best Jaguar-Land Rover customers.
